The Sweetest Holiday Craft: DIY Felt Gingerbread Ornaments To Make This Christmas

Every Christmas, one of my enduring traditions has been to gift each of my children and grandchildren a special ornament chosen just for them. It is something I started doing when my children were just babies. When they were grown and had their own homes, they had a great start on an ornament collection for their own trees that held a little piece of our shared Christmas memories in each ornament. πŸŽ„

This year I decided to make a personalized ornament for each of my children and grandchildren. The theme? Felt gingerbread ornaments! They are soft, sweet and full of charm. They will bring a cozy gingerbread cookie feel to the tree minus the crumbs! They are easy to personalize and everyone will receive an ornament crafted just for them.πŸŽ„

  • βœ… Tan felt
  • βœ… Gingerbread man cookie cutter for your pattern
  • βœ… Small black beads for eyes
  • βœ… Black and tan embroidery floss
  • βœ… Narrow decorative ribbon and little jingle bells for the hanger
  • βœ… Fabric bows for either hair bows or bow ties
  • βœ… Small alphabet beads for personalization
  • βœ… Festive string for stringing the letters for personalization
  • βœ… Buttons for embellishment
  • βœ… Polyester Fiber Fill for stuffing
  • βœ… Cut out your ornaments. Trace around your cookie cutter with a light pencil and cut them out. You should be able to get 4 gingerbreads out of each piece of felt depending on the size of your cutter. You will need 2 pieces per ornament.
  • βœ… Take half of your pieces and set them aside. Attach the eyes (small black beads) .
  • βœ… Embroider the smiles using 2 strands of black embroidery floss using the basic outline stitch. Each skein of embroidery floss consists of 6 strands. We will use only 2 strands for both the smiles and the assembly.
  • βœ… String the alphabet letters on the festive string to spell out your desired name. Use a generous length of string as this can always be trimmed later. Attach the string to the back side of your front piece right behind the neck using needle and thread. Trim. Once you have the letters strung you may want to tie a knot in the string where you are tacking the string to the ornament to make it easier to attach.
  • βœ… Cut the ribbons for the hangers to your desired length and string a little bell in the middle of
  • each one-set aside.
  • βœ… Attach the fabric bows to either the neck for a bow tie or the top of the head for a hair bow as desired.
  • βœ… Attach buttons as desired. You can embellish these in any way you would like! Let your creative spirit flow!
  • βœ… Make sure you have all the details done and desired embellishments attached to front of the ornament before you attach the back.
  • βœ… Attach the front to the back of the ornament taking care to additionally secure the name string and the hanger ribbon as you go. Attach the 2 pieces using a basic blanket stitch with 2 strands of tan embroidery floss. Leave a section open on the bottom for stuffing.
  • βœ… Stuff your ornament. Most bags of stuffing come with a wooden stick to make it easier to stuff the head and the arms. A chopstick works well too.
  • βœ… Sew your ornament closed using the blanket stitch.
