How to Plant and Take Care of Indoor Succulents: Keeping Succulents Happy In the House
If you are interested in adding some greenery to your indoor space and have never had much luck with keeping houseplants alive, succulents are the perfect choice for you. They are cute, interesting ,colorful and, best of all, they do not require a lot of care. Though succulents are low maintenance plants, getting them started the right way will make a big difference in how well they grow, how healthy they look, and ultimately, how long they will last.
Things you will need to get started
- Succulents of your choosing
- Container with good drainage
- Cactus/Succulent specific potting mix
- Cactus/Succulent specific plant food
- Pebbles or small stones
- A sunny spot near a window š
Let’s get them planted!
- Pick a pot with good drainage. Succulents will not do well if sitting in soggy soil
- Put a layer of pebbles or small stones in the bottom of your container
- Fill the container with cactus/succulent specific potting mix
- You can mix sand or perlite with regular potting mix if you do not have the specific mix suggested
- Remove your plant from it’s original container gently and place in the pot
- Surround the plant with plenty of fresh soil, pressing lightly
- Add a layer of pebbles or small stones on the top surrounding the plants
- Do not water initially, give any damaged roots time to heal

- Water very sparingly. Every 2-3 weeks is generally sufficient
- Do not mist. Succulents do not need nor like humidity
- Place them on a sunny windowsill or near a window. Bright indirect light is best
- Dust the leaves occasionally, dust blocks sunlight and can inhibit growth
- Do not keep in a bathroom, that environment is way too humid
- Feed with cactus/succulent specific plant food according to directions
Troubleshooting Tips: Watch for warning signs
- Are the leaves wrinkled or appear shriveled? They need water
- Are the leaves mushy or discolored? They are being over watered
- Do the stems seem stretchy? Your succulents need more light
- Are the leaf tips dry or discolored? They are getting too much direct sun
- Are the leaves sticky or have white matter on them? They have mealybugs. Dab with rubbing alcohol daily until the pests are gone
Growing indoor succulents is not complicated, they are one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow, even if you are a beginner or do not have a green thumb. With the right container, potting mix and drainage stones your indoor succulents will thrive, grow and bring beauty to your home. Just remember, more light and less water! Enjoy!
