Dry Brushing: Discover the Health and Beauty Benefits
By definition, dry brushing refers to the practice of using a brush with firm bristles to exfoliate the skin without water or any other liquid. It involves sweeping the brush across dry skin in upward strokes towards the heart. It is often used as a form of exfoliation and it potentially stimulates the lymphatic system.
There is a school of thought that suggests that dry brushing can help stimulate the lymphatic system, which helps in removing waste and toxins from the body. However, scientific evidence supporting this claim, while existing, is limited.
Benefits of Dry Brushing
- It exfoliates dead skin cells. A noticeable result of dry brushing is smoother skin. The gentle friction removes, dry, flaky skin cells leaving it much softer and refreshed. It helps to unclog pores, prevent ingrown hairs and improves the overall health of your skin.
- It boosts circulation. The brushing stimulates blood flow to come to the skin’s surface, promoting oxygen delivery. Increased circulation gives your skin a healthy glow.
- It supports lymphatic drainage. Your lymphatic system is paramount in removing toxins from the body. Dry brushing helps to stimulate lymphatic flow. Many experts consider dry brushing a gentle, supportive detox activity. As mentioned above, there is a lot of debate among experts as to how effective this is, but there is enough positive reporting on the subject that I felt it was worth including.
- It can reduce the appearance of cellulite. It is definitely not a magic cure, however, dry brushing may temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite by improving circulation. Some evidence suggests that over time, it may help tighten the skin and create a smoother look.
- It can be energizing and invigorating. Many people, including me, feel energized after dry brushing. The process stimulates the nerves and wakes up the skin.
- It encourages mindful self-care. Taking a few minutes for yourself and dry brushing creates space for mindfulness and self-connection. It slows you down, allows you to be present and shows your body a little love. Self-care is so important. I can’t say it enough. You cannot fill anyone else’s cup if yours is empty. 😉
There is a large selection of different types of brushes available. It is nice to have both a handheld one and one with a handle for doing your back and other hard to reach spots. Please find links for some brushes and sets at the bottom of the blog.
How to Dry Brush Properly
Make sure to choose right type of brush. Look for a firm, natural bristle brush . It is nice to have a handle for hard to reach spots.
Brush before showering, always dry brush on dry skin.
Start at your feet and brush upward towards the heart. When brushing your arms, start at your fingers and brush upward towards your shoulders.
Be very gentle. The goal is to stimulate, not irritate. Avoid broken, sensitive skin and any rashes you may have.
Moisturize thoroughly after you shower with a good quality moisturizer.
