Clever Christmas Decorating Ideas Using Tension Rods
When it comes to holiday decorating, tension rods are one of the most underrated tools you can have in your Christmas decorating supply stash. They are super affordable, renter friendly and limitlessly versatile. They allow you to add festive decor to any room in your home without nails, screws or permanent damage to window frames, cabinets or doorways. Whether you want to feature special ornaments, frame your windows with greenery and lights or add a magical touch to your kitchen, tension rods can do it all.
πHere are a couple of creative, simple, inexpensive and surprisingly beautiful things I have done with tension rods in my own home.π
π A Magical Hanging Ornament Display
I turned the doorway between my entry and the main part of my house into a welcoming, sparkling holiday display. Here is how I did it! π
- 1. π Install a tension rod across the window frame or doorway. No need for a step ladder at this point, arrange the tension rod at eye level for decorating purposes. You can slide it into the desired position when you have attached everything, much easier on the arms and the back.
- 2. π Drape with desired type of garland. This hides the rod and will make your display appear to be suspended. Add lights, battery operated lights are nice, there won’t be any cords showing.
- 3. π Hang ornaments in varying lengths using fishing line, ribbon or twine.
- 4. π Mix shapes, colors and sizes or ornaments for an eye catching cascade.
- 5. π Carefully slide your tension rod up and into the desired location.
This seemingly floating holiday decoration is modern, fun, very whimsical and adds a whole lot of charm. It is perfect for spaces where you want decor but either do not have surfaces to decorate or do not want to clutter surfaces that you do have. π

π A Festive Cookie Cutter and Ribbon Hanging Display
I turned the space above my kitchen sink into a cheerful, cozy Christmas cookie cutter wonderland. Here is how I did it! π
- 1. π Install a tension rod between the cabinets bordering your kitchen sink. Again, work with the rod at eye level. Add all decorations before sliding it into place.
- 2. π Drape rod with desired type of garland. I used a felt garland with wooden beads for this application to pull it all together with the cabinets.
- 3. π Add lights if desired. I would for sure use battery operated ones in the kitchen as most of the outlets are often being used. For my purposes, I chose to do this one without lights.
- 4. π Add seasonal, kitchen themed decor such as seasonal tea towels, kitchen utensils, festive mugs, cookie cutters or kitchen themed ornaments. Attach the embellishments with ribbon, fishing line or twine.
- 5. π Carefully slide your tension rod up and into the desired location.
Your kitchen deserves holiday cheer too! This is an easy, inexpensive, clutter and mess free way to add charm to the busiest room of the house! π

These are just 2 examples of the many things you can do with tension rods when decorating your home for Christmas. Here are a few more ideas for you to consider!
- π Add greenery and lights to your window frames without causing any damage. You could add small decorative accents such as bows, bells or pinecones.
- π Build a Christmas gift wrap station. Install them in a closet or crafting nook. Put gift wrap and ribbon on the rods to keep everything accessible during the holiday rush.
- π If you are hosting over the holidays, make a festive North Pole coat rack. Transform your entry way with a tension rod. You could also hang Santa hats, Christmas scarves and decorative mittens to add a little whimsey. Make sure to leave room for your guest’s coats!
- π Hang stockings. No mantel? No problem! A sturdy tension rod in a doorway or between 2 walls can transform into a full stocking display or mini mantel. Use S hooks for easy, organized hanging.
- π Display Christmas cards in style. Install a tension rod over a window or in an alcove and attach cards with mini clothespins.
The uses for tension rods in holiday decorating are only limited by your imagination. The beauty of this decorating hack is that you can decorate and embellish your rods any way you can possibly imagine and you can place them is so many spaces without need for tools or hardware and you will never cause any permanent damage to the surfaces in your home. It is also a way to decorate without breaking the bank! Grab yourself some tension rods, ribbons, garlands and ornaments & get creative!
