DIY Embellished Denim Jacket: The Perfect Gift For a Special Child

DIY Embellished Denim Jacket: The Perfect Gift For a Special Child

  • The jacket will be one of a kind, no two will be the same
  • You get to exercise your creativity to reflect your affection for your little one
  • Denim jackets are practical, stylish and functional for everyday wear
  • The jacket is customizable and can easily be adapted for any age, style and interests

Denim jackets are timeless. They can be paired with most anything in your little one’s wardrobe, they wear well and can be worn year round. For my project, I opted to go with buttons, embroidery and letter iron on patches for personalization. The possibilities, however are endless. That is the beauty of this project! You may also want to use patches, rhinestones or fabric paints to complete your jacket. Gather your supplies, have fun and start creating!

  • Wash the jacket before starting to remove sizing and improve adhesion
  • Lay the jacket flat and carefully consider your layout and design
  • Use cardboard inside the jacket to prevent glue and fabric paint from seeping through if you are using these products
  • Tack the letters and patches down by hand after ironing them on to prevent them from lifting after laundering
  • If your child is sensitive to textures, cover the back of the embroidery to create a smooth surface
  • Denim jacket, new or thrifted. Please see the link to the one I used below
  • Colorful and sparkly buttons
  • Embroidery thread and needle
  • Iron on letters or decals as desired
  • Extra large denim patches for lining. This is also linked below
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Fabric paint and markers
  • Rhinestones
  • Fabric Glue
  • Tweezers for rhinestones
  • Patches that express the interests of the child. I linked a variety of these below also

  • Plan your design. Decide on placement of patches, buttons & embroidery
  • Sew buttons on to the jacket in the places desired
  • Use a needle and embroidery floss to hand stitch your patterns. Use an embroidery hoop to keep the fabric taut. I used the Lazy Daisy stitch for the flowers and a French Knot for the centers
  • Iron on the patches in the desired places. I recommend hand tacking them in a few spots to keep them in place after laundering
  • Apply any additional embellishments you may want to add with fabric paint, markers or rhinestones. Use fabric glue to attach rhinestones. If using fabric glue, make sure you allow plenty of time for it to set, usually 24 hours
