Frizzy, Dry, Coarse, Unmanageable Hair? The Right Cut & Moisturizing Products Can Help.

Frizzy, Dry, Coarse, Unmanageable Hair? The Right Cut & Moisturizing Products Can Help.

Have you battled with your frizzy, dry, coarse and unmanageable hair your entire life? You are not alone. Frizzy, dry, coarse unmanageable hair is a common struggle. This is especially true if you live in a humid or very dry climate or if your hair is over processed. There is , however, good news. The right haircut, moisturizing products and heat styling habits can make all the difference and transform how your hair looks and feels.

I know for me, it has been a struggle. In addition, my hair is also very thick and wavy. I have tried so many cuts and products over the years. My go to for a long time was keeping it very short in order to keep it under control, however, I never liked it and never felt good about the way my hair looked. As I have gotten a bit older, I have experimented with different lengths and have learned that you can find a cut that can help control your mane that doesn’t need to be super short! There are also so many great products out there that you do not need to let the type of hair you have limit your styling choices!

Why Does Your Hair Become Frizzy, Dry and Unmanageable?

Frizzy hair generally goes hand in hand with dry hair. When your hair does not have enough moisture, the cuticle of your hair lifts, allowing humidity to penetrate your hair and cause frizz. Not using quality , moisturizing hair products, over washing, too much heat styling and too many chemical treatments make the situation worse. Genetics and the weather also can affect the texture of your hair.

Cheers for the right cut!!

If there is one thing I can say for sure…the perfect cut can be elusive but it is oh so important. It can take lots of trial and error, bad hair days and the seemingly never ending search for just the right stylist for you. The right haircut makes a big difference in the texture of your hair, the ease of daily haircare and styling and in how you feel about yourself and the way your hair looks. We all feel better when we are having a good hair day!

  • 1. Go for layers. Layers remove bulk and add shape to your style without adding pouf. Make sure the layers are not too short or choppy as that can make your hair more frizzy and difficult to style.
  • 2. Get your hair thinned a bit each time you have it cut being careful not to overdo it as you don’t want to create extra bulk as the thinned hair grows out.
  • 3. Have your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to avoid dry, split ends that will make the frizz more noticeable.
  • 4. Avoid razor cuts. Razor cuts tend to damage the ends of your hair making it frizzier than it needs to be.

Tips for caring for your frizzy, dry, coarse and unmanageable hair

Avoid washing your hair more than 2-3 times per week max. Excess washing will dry you hair out.

Use good quality, sulfate free moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Use microfiber or T-shirt fabric towels to gently blot your hair dry. Rubbing hair or using traditional terry cloth towels can tend to lift the cuticle, making frizz worse.

Use a leave in conditioner on your hair when damp to lock in moisture.

Limit heat styling as much as possible. Try a diffuser when blow drying. Always use a heat protectant when blow drying, using a curling iron or a straightener. If using a heated styling tool, always use it on as low of a setting as your can.

Use a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask one to two times per week. Leave it on with your hair covered for 20-30 minutes for the best results.

Use a good quality hair serum after styling to help hold your hair, reduce frizz and add softness and sheen to your hair.

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or invest in a silk or satin bonnet to wear at night. This will reduce friction and help keep your hair smooth and frizz free.

Taking care of your dry, frizzy, coarse hair requires consistent care including moisturizing, gentle handling and protective styling. This will improve your hair’s texture and reduce frizz. Using good quality moisturizing products, reducing heat styling as much as possible and getting a good layered haircut can all go a long ways towards making your hair softer, more manageable and healthier over time.
