I Need a New Can Opener! Tips to Refresh and Organize Your Kitchen
Is your kitchen and kitchen tool collection in need of a refresh? Whether it is a drawer full of worn and mismatched utensils that no longer function properly or a pantry that has become a black hole, a simple refresh and a few new things may be all that is needed. You do not need a full renovation to make a big impact. Sometimes, some small swaps and some smart organization are all it takes to breathe new life into your space! Let’s get started!
Declutter one drawer or cabinet at a time. Start with your utensil drawer. Toss duplicates and worn out items, donate any unused gadgets. Invest in drawer organizers and cabinet organizers such as can racks. Clean, organized spaces that make sense reduces stress and will make your meal prep much easier and maybe even a little bit fun! Some specific items that may need replacing include:
- Sponges, dish cloths & kitchen towels
- Nonstick pans
- Plastic food containers
- Dish brushes
- Rubber spatulas
- Wooden utensils
- Knives
- Oven mitts and potholders
- Vegetable peelers, can openers & graters
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Expired spices and food items
Create a “Daily Use” zone. Designate a spot for items you use every day, such as your favorite mug, spatulas, salt & pepper shakers and maybe even your new can opener. Keeping these items easily accessible saves time and mental energy.
Use clear containers, labels and onion & potato storage bins. Transfer pantry staples such as rice, pasta, cereal and snacks into clear containers. Put potatoes, onions and other root vegetables into storage bins. This not only looks good but it also helps you keep track of what you actually have on hand and what you need to replenish. No more surprises!
Add a pop of green. A small herb garden on your windowsill or a low maintenance plant can bring life to your kitchen. It can add color and freshness to the space.
Hang, don’t stack, utilize vertical space. Use adhesive wall hooks to take advantage of unused wall space to hang oven mitts, pot holders, measuring cups and spoons and maybe even your new can opener. Add shelf risers to your cabinets. This frees up drawer and cabinet space and can make your kitchen more functional.
Consider installing open shelving. If you have the room for it, I would recommend installing some open shelving. Not only is it super on trend right now, but it can be a decorative, functional addition that frees up cabinet space and provides an attractive focal point for your kitchen.
Clean and organize under your sink. Get rid of any outdated, unused cleaning products and chemicals. Consider getting an under the sink mat. This will protect the wooden floor of your cabinet and makes it much easier to clean up spills. Put all items you use daily such as dish detergent in the front of the cabinet. Organize other cleaning products accordingly. This will make kitchen clean up go much more quickly.

Purchasing a new can opener and other needed items, purging and organizing your cabinets and drawers may seem like small things but they are symbolic. It means you are investing in a kitchen that works for you! You will find it much easier to prepare meals and get the clean up done! It means less stress and maybe even a little fun! Who doesn’t want an organized, well stocked kitchen with properly working utensils and equipment? As for me, I am anxiously awaiting the new can opener I ordered last night!
